hi! i have a question :)
a.i want to buy a guitar effect (i think)
b.budget- around 100-200 usd c.i want to play rock blues, and some metal(nirvana ,smashing pumpkins, pink floyd, srv, hendrix, marty freidman, iron maiden) d.current gear- fender strat american standard HSS ,fender vibro-champ amp(i use the amp effects). e.i started playing 5 years ago. i really like my gear, its perfect for pink floyd but i cant get the proper grunge sound ,or the proper drive when i solo . another question-should i change my guitar instead? can i play metal with strat? thanks! |
Since you have an American Strat, I assume you have some decent cash flow. Based on that, I would say get a new amp that's more suited to those styles. (I assume you're talking distortion). A JCM800 would be a good choice I believe. If you really want to get a pedal, Wampler plexi-drive and plextortion get a lot of love here. Most of that stuff you listed makes me think along a Marshall sound.

I don't know if a pedal is a good idea with that amp because there are two models the tweed vibro-champ that is all tube and there is the blackface one which is in fact a moddeler. If it is the black face one if possible go to a local store with pedals and set the amp on clean and noon. The pedal should be at noon as well if it sounds like liquid feces you might want a new amp I suggest a flextone, because nothing else is going to nail that marshal tone for under two hundred bucks.

my amp is vibro champ xd its a cheap tube amp but i like it oops......:) i preffer not changing the amp +i dont have more than 200$ |
It might be worth you trying a big muff, something like the Earthquaker Hoof would do pretty much everything you wanted, might be a bit too loose for Maiden though
|
Get this as well, it's only like $20-30 or so. http://www.joyoaudio.com/en/product/show_122.html

Buy two used pedals. A Boss DS-1 will give you that high gain/crunchy nasty sound that you'll want for Nirvana.
I'd also buy a Digitech bad monkey to help boost the guitar signal & get a better overdriven tone from the amp. |
|
Yeah if you're doing it on the cheap a DS1 and a Bad Monkey will be 2 good options. And if you shop around you should be able to get them both for a hundred bucks. That being said, another wonderful thing you should invest in is a Wah pedal, you won't regret it.
Keep your eyes on your local kijiji ads for random awesome deals that pop up every now and then. Deltalab make probably the best cheap pedals out there. (in my experience anyway). |

Actually not a bad idea to look at Joyo, but I wouldn't get the distortion I'd go for something like this http://www.joyoaudio.com/en/product/show_124.html Alongside the Hoof fuzz you should be able to boost it and tighten up the bottom end a bit to give you a pretty good representation of the Maiden kind of sound. |

thanks,i never heard of that joyo thing, the price is a bit suspicious :) is it good? |
They're alright, not great. But if you're only using it as a boost (level high, gain very low, tone to taste) which I would advise, then it'll be fine.

If were talking cheap I vot BBE AM64 way above a ds-1. Trust me
|
I still suggest trying the amp out with dirt pedals though first. I'm sure you don't want to drop $200 on a pedal and learn it sucks. If you like it and doesn't sound like an ungodly fizz storm I suggest you look into buying a joyo or used tech 21 amp sim pedal. The tech 21 is discontinued you have to go used.
