Takamine EG363SC vs. Takamine GN93CE
I'm a newbie still learning chords on my 12 year old starter acoustic. I'd like to upgrade to something better and my long time guitar playing friend suggested the Takamine GN93CE which runs about $550 online. I went to my local music shop and they have a Takamine EG363SC for the same price.

What's the difference between these two? I'm assuming that the EG363SC is getting replaced by the GN93CE but that's from a complete newbie perspective because many sites list the EG363SC as being discontinued.

the GN93CE is a mini jumbo sort of body - takamine calls it a NEX. the EG363SC is a dreadnaught. both have solid spruce tops and laminated rosewood backs and sides, cutaways and electronics, although not the same electronics. the difference in body types can make a difference in both tone and comfort.

I liked the sound from the EG363SC and I liked the look of it.

I haven't heard the GN93CE but it appears that it doesn't have the detailing on the fret board like the EG363SC has. I like the detailing. One thing it does have is a pickguard though which as a newbie, I think I want.

I'm not sure what to do....

get the one you like the sound of. the other, being a totally different shape, won't sound like it. you can always buy and attach a pickguard or pay a guitar tech to do it.

a couple good places to buy pickguards:

Is there something wrong with putting a pickguard on a guitar that didn't come with one?

not really, but if you're unsure, you can get a removable pickguard.

Thank you. I went in yesterday and played with a few guitars. I ended up coming home with the EG363SC. It looks great and sounds great!

Cool Axe.... have fun.

It probably came fitted with D'Addario strings. Try Elixer 11s nanoweb you might be pleasantly surprised . Cheers
