Post/Experimental Metal Thread

Since threads about post metal bands are rarely used and/or bumped, I just figured I would make a thread for the whole genre.

So, have at it.

Neurosis
Pelican
ISIS
Rosetta
Red Sparowes
Mouth of the Architect
Made Out of Babies (I see them as post metal, at least)
Battle of Mice

etc.

Share the love.

Would Sunn O))) go here? I've heard some of them and loved it but not a whole lot. Haven't really ventured into the post/experimental sub-genres too far.

dminishedthingy 08-29-2008 11:04 AM

Sunn O)) is drone, i wouldn't call it experimental
there's a drone thread in the Other forum

so...
just got Oceanic by ISIS
awesome

bootyguard 08-29-2008 11:12 AM

Isis and Pelican are both awesome

... would Cult of Luna go here then?

BringMeTheCalm 08-29-2008 11:14 AM

Battle of Mice is awesome. I dig that chick's vocals.

dminishedthingy 08-29-2008 11:21 AM

Julie Christmas is amazing.

And insane. Literally. o_O

Have you heard Made Out of Babies? She does their vocals, as well. :)

"The Ruiner" is one of the greatest albums of the year.

Yeah, they would.

ALSO, Intronaut. EXTREMELY underrated band. "Null" and "Void" are masterpieces.

I need to hear their new album....._

Solstafir, Caina, Fen, and Solefald are all pretty cool post-black metal.

And of course, Agalloch must be mentioned here.

fallenangel20 08-29-2008 12:46 PM

I'll have to check those post-black bands out.

H.O.P.E. is Symphonic Post-Black. That guy KNOWS how to write some songs. :)

progbass 08-29-2008 12:56 PM

this wasn't started because of my mention in the Opeth thread about Isis was it?

Anyways, I love Isis, and Pelican does great work as well, but I have yet to get into Cult Of Luna. All I know about them is that they did a tour with Agalloch. Any album recs per say?

And I keep hearing mixed feelings about Jesu...

fallenangel20 08-29-2008 01:19 PM

:haha

No, I started it because threads about post metal bands are so widely ignored, and threads about entire genres usually get a bit more feeback, which is good on many levels.

Like, two days ago, I bumped a thread about Mouth of the Architect, and no one posted.

Now I post a thread about the genre in general, and it's getting decent posts. :p:

Plus, I just love the genre. :)

As far as post metal goes, I have the Isis discography, Agalloch discography and Somewhere Along the Highway by Cult of Luna. The latter being an absolute masterpiece, I actually prefer it to anything by Isis. It has a really awesome sound, as they recorded the basic tracks in an octagonal wooden cabin.

Post metal is a genre I still haven't properly explored, I definitely need to give the albums I have more listens and get some new ones too.

Get "Void" by Intronaut.

Crushing is an understatement. :p:

Yeah I've heard a bit, but I prefer her vocals in Battle of Mice.

Also I can't believe I haven't mentioned Sculptured and the title has the word "experimental"... They are incredible.

Ephel Duath is pretty sweet, i have "pain necessary to know", and its wonderfully strange

BringMeTheCalm 08-29-2008 02:20 PM

Yeah man, Ephel Duath rules. I have Painter's Palette. Good stuff. I think they have a new CD soon.

GASP! how evil, kvlt, and totally awesome....must listen now!

Ah, I am new to post metal as well, and Isis takes the cake for me so far. It's like Tool and Pelican got welded together and the result was actually beautiful. As they say, the whole is better than the sum of its parts.

And Calm, I was just about to mention Sculptured, honest I was. Apollo Ends is a great album for those who like psuedo melo-death with horn sections and great atmosphere.

On the downside, Apollo Ends had some meh vocals by most people's standards, but they certainly got the job done. The drumming is decent, nothing sporadic like on Embodiment, but nothing that certainly jumps out and grabs you. But Anderson doesn't write riffs, he writes songs. And dammit, I finally know which solos are his in Agalloch. That is, all the really good ones.
