Yes, you need to have the neck pocket already routed, then put the bridge in place according to its scale length.
I usually put my bridge pickup around 1" from where the strings touch the saddles on...

You sure you want to keep that basswood natural? It is a very ugly wood, and doenst take stain well. And yes, it is insanely soft, so it will dent really easily.

There are plenty of youtube videos on how to spray and paint guitars. Those are easier to watch than it will be to explain it to you.

The fret slots should be just a hair deeper than the bottom of the tang.
You also want it to bite into the slot sideways, or else it will pop back out.

Why 25 or 26 frets? That is a random number.

It shouldnt have burned them out. I have one of my main guitars wired that way, but without the 3rd clip to joint them together. It shouldnt have a negative affect.

It isnt the locking nut that makes string changes a pain, it is the floating trem. Dont base your whole purchase on a locking nut. They do their job just fine.

Well what needs to be improved regarding steel frets? The are the hardest, smoothest material available. You cant ask for more than that. I just dont see a single need to try to improve the best.
