I've got a Jet City JCA5012C. Its forte is saturated lead tones but I guess it could pull off newer Opeth. Not as vintage sounding, but it'd be alright.

I'd check out the Sovtek Mig50, Fender Blues Junior, Marshall Slash SL5, and the Mesa/Boogie Express. All of those can do growly mid-gain tones...

My HRD doesn't get much louder past 4, it only adds more gain. Something might be up with your amp. You will NOT get clean tones fully cranked, that's for certain.

It's fizzy, but that doesn't mean it's bright. I have both a Jet City & a 6505 right now and the Jet City smokes it as far as thick sludgy tones go.
