At what volume did you play? If you play with your 6505+ at 0.5 post gain and with post gain at 2 with 5150 of course the 5150 will sound a lot tighter.

In our rehearsal room we had a Crate GX65 (65 watt solid state) and Peavey 6505+ 112 (60 watt tube). Peavey was maybe about 1.5 times louder. It was a really noticeable difference.

Just to emphasize what Offworld92 said, you should not overlook what your drummer is playing. Drums can make a night and day difference between oldschool and modern metal sound.
