I have the 7-string version its a pretty solid guitar. Yes you can play any guitar in any genre. I play a lot of death metal and use a ocean blue les paul standard and a telecaster haha.

What pickups are in the Gibson now? The 498t is a little hotter for passive (as far as gibson pups) but not as much as a blackout would be. I honestly would stick with the 498t/490r

I like to use my gigging rig for practice too...

I like to use my gigging rig for practice too simply because I like the sound and playing on a practice amp never lived up to the sound of the half stack, so I stick with that.
