Your amp is the weak link. "Filthy balls" is a general difference between ss and tube. Get a jet city and be done with it.

Another option is to get a powered speaker.

I'm not a tech, far from it, but from my experience volume fluctuations (and/or crackling) are the main indicators that I need new power tubes. And new power tubes have always solved the problem....

I play bass through a guitar amp all the time. It doesn't screw up the speaker if you're just dicking around. Not optimum sound, but it doesn't seem to hurt it.
