Assuming that you've hooked it all up correctly, the battery isn't flat in your wah, and you've actually switched the wah on, you should DEFINITELY hear a wah effect. I've never heard of a wah sound...

I've got a 57/62 set in my custom-built strat. Swampash body, maple neck + fretboard, sounds wonderful. A little pricey, like all Fender stuff, but worth the price in my opinion, they sound great.

Like others have mentioned, it's really false economy driving to the store for just one string. I generally have 3-4 full sets in every guitar case, and a good 20+ extra sets spare in a box at home....
