I struggled a lot with that "Hetfield" picking but I started building right hand strenght by up picking and downpicking and I already feel a lot more comfortable playing that alternate picking thing.

Bridge pickup works just fine. And the neck pickup used to work fine about three years. Haven't noticed any weird behavior of knobs.

And the volume doesn't fluctuate.

Learn a song by ear. To me music looks boring on tabulatures but when you learn it by ear it feels special and you can remember it better.

Developing your ear in the process isn't bad either.
