My gut would tell you to get a TS style overdrive for usefulness, I'd recommend the MXR modified overdrive. Compressors are really handy for good clean tones though, so it's whichever one you'll get...

I think it's hard to say, but it certainly isn't impossible. Just pay attention to the pitches your singing and if they feel right to you, and work on singing in-between your diaphragm and your head....
