I'd have said basswood would've been pretty decent for that range of stuff, on the basis that it sort of falls between the warmer mahogany tones of g n r and the brighter ash (?) tone of early EVH....

Maybe keep an eye on the ibanezes. the yen is weakening currently and there are a couple of prestige models with hardtail bridges (the s models). if you're lucky they might drop a bit in price....
