I don't know if I seek it out, but my explorer style bass has a super hot passive humbucker in it. I love the way it hits the amp, and it sounds great overdriven, too.

I have a one-spot on each of my pedal boards (1 guitar and 1 bass). They do fine. A 1-spot with a 5 way adapter shouldn't cost more than $30 US.

Keep at it. Find a teacher or some sort of mentor. Books, DVDs, and YouTube only go so far. Real people can motivate you and give you feedback on your playing. Maybe there's a technique issue there....

Thanks for all the tips. I have a bunch of old parts and a broken wah pedal on eBay. We'll see what they do and maybe I will get something new after that.
