But can it be done by just soldering all the wires together then covering them with tape? On the diagram it doesn't show them soldered to the back of the pots. Will it make a difference?

It isn't the jack. I just installed 2 dfferent ones and that didn't help. Tomorrow I'll replace the pots hopefully. I have a few extras. I've been wanting to replace them anyway .
