All you have to do is remove the 4 baseplate...

All you have to do is remove the 4 baseplate screws. Nothing to it, really. You don't even have to unsolder the pickups if the cables are long enough.

1/4" is the size of the hole that the plug goes into, so you need a slightly bigger diameter to fit the threaded sleeve that the jack mounts to the panel with. 3/8" ought to be perfect.
