Quality amp will go a long way, especially something versatile like say Marshall jcm2000 dsl. If you must get a board the forum is pretty much divided over Boss GT-100 and Line6 HD500.

AT is your best bet at this budget. AKG 240 mkII if you can swing $100. Presonus make a decent knockoff of these cheaper if you can't, about $60.

Look at Marshall VS8100 - it has one preamp tube but it is pretty much ss. Chuck Shuldiner used one and early norwegian BM bands seemed to favor them.

By all means get a new amp but if you decide on staying on the current one the Blackstar HT-Dual is a great distortion/overdrive box, it would easily do the high gain stuff you want.
