You could probably get away with three semitones...

You could probably get away with three semitones on most strings. On the E and A you could probably go up five semitones safely, but as other pointed out there are many factors to consider....

Actually a .012 string can reach G without snapping, though I would advise against it since it would not be good for the neck in the long run. I'd would definitely go with .009 or .010. .008 works...

Here are the findings. I got a nylon g string up to Eb. Those nylon strings sure do stretch. Now on to steel strings. The Hi e up to almost g#. b string up to f#. G string up to C. D string up to G#....
