Have you tried using a different instrument cable? (I'm guessing you have but you never mentioned it) you could try doing a factory reset on it as well.

Thanks for all of the advice everyone. The guitar is not worth very much so if there is a chance of it being fixed, it will be a DIY job, as getting a professional to do it would probably cost more...

I've heard the display on the boss is a bit brighter. I own the pitchblack, and at an outdoor gig in sunlight its pretty hard to make out. I'd say they're both pretty similar though!

The only difference between the standard decimator and the g-string is that the g-string can be used in stereo, so unless you're using a stereo rig, I wouldn't bother spending more for the g-string....
