I have fender Texas special pickups in my strat and they do the creamy blues, chimey cleans, and gritty blues/ classic rock sounds very well... They also clean up great with a volume roll off

I can't help you about the BD-2 mod... but I did the DS-1 mod myself for around 20 bucks in parts... it wasn't that hard... only took me about 2-3 hours including troubleshooting when I effed it up...
