As long as the original take is right on phrasing and timing, there's nothing wrong with tweaking its sound in the mix.

I thought rap was the speaking bit and hip-hop was the music. So rap on its own isn't music (which needs melody / harmony as well as rhythm) in the same way as poetry isn't music.

Rhythm and harmony are vehicles for melody. They're subordinate to it.

A song doesn't need a unique rhythm. It doesn't need a unique harmony. It needs a unique melody.
