I'm not saying it muddles the guitar to pieces, I'm just saying that headroom is key with these bands. Its not the worst thing in the world, but 95% of the tone definitely from the preamp section...

Some rock bands use much more gain than some metal bands. Hell, a lot of Creed uses way more gain than Iron Maiden or old Judas Priest.
