Has the guitar been re-fretted for some reason? Only the neck binding is completely wrong for a Gibson.

I find the better stores would give you a decent amp to play through anyway. I have played guitars at not so good stores and they tend to set you up playing through some crap amp that puts you off...

It depends on why the guitar is going out of tune. If it's tremelo use then I'd lube the nut, if it's general tuning stability without trem use it's more than likely the way it's been strung.
