Thing is, I have a shitload of songs nearly finished but they tend to be either on the blues side or on the metal side...

Yes, it can never hurt to know a few song everyone knows. Also your 12 bar blues is always a winner. If not, I just noodle around, but things turn in a saucagefest pretty quick.
