When changing the pots, changing a 500k to 250k pot will sound warmer... basically "dialed half way down." Nice if you like that, not great for super hot pickups which can become muddy.

The bare wire is always ground, as mentioned earlier normally going to the back of the volume pot. Make sure it has a path to ground since even a humbucker will hum if the case and magnetic poles...
