yeah if it sounds good with your friends amp then the problem isn't the speaker its your amp, weather that is impedance or something internally with the amp....check impedance and then try your amp...

I always go for the head/cab option mainly...

I always go for the head/cab option mainly because I like how it looks, but also it gives options for using lots of different cabs with it.....

I have owned the HT5 and personally didn't really like...

I'm picking if it has a floyd routing then its for a recessed floyd (?) which usually means the neck is really low in the neck pocket so wrap around bridge will be way to high to get the action low...

You might get away with using lacquer thinner to remove the nitro, but it will take a lot of "elbow grease". The advantage is it doesn't effect the binding like a lot of powerful paint strippers...

yeah looks like they just taped up the fretboard ... you would want to keep the board as dry as possible so make sure the tape is on nice and flat and thick

I have never seen swirl on the neck...

I always get the medium/highest because I like quite narrow frets prefer not to feel to much wood under my fingers, plus the tallest one gives you a bit more room to fix problems when levelling
