Just scuff sand it with 400 grit sandpaper until it isnt shiny anymore.

That is not going to be nearly accurate enough man. They need to be accurate down to an extremely tight tolerance. You will have horrible intonation problems doing it like that.

I usually put my bridge pickup around 1" from where the strings touch the saddles on...

You sure you want to keep that basswood natural? It is a very ugly wood, and doenst take stain well. And yes, it is insanely soft, so it will dent really easily.

There are plenty of youtube videos on how to spray and paint guitars. Those are easier to watch than it will be to explain it to you.
