A$250 isn't gonna get you much. A Blackstar HT1, Peavey Vypyr or Roland Cube, that's about it. If you can find a cheap Vypyr 30 on Gumtree, that'd be my recommendation.

The tone shift button is actually quite handy, you don't notice much difference...

The XL is pretty cool, however if you like the Korg synths, I suggest you spend a little extra and get the R3... the bigger keys are a lot more comfortable and it sounds great for the price.

Using a compressor pedal helps with getting JF's clean tones if you can't afford a Silver Jubilee and a Major. A muff and a DS2 (preferably Japanese) will also help. I get pretty good Froosh tones...
