I don't really know to much about electronics, I'm competent enough to wire pickups and figure out how to wire things in to do certain things but I'm hopeless at reading schematics or designing them....

I agree, there's a lot of myth behind pickups. I read in an interview with Eddie Kramer where he commented on how pickups are a pretty standard thing and he didn't find much difference between them....
