You should try out the Gear Building & Customizing forum. Also, paint on paint can work, if you prep correctly, but going to the wood is the best idea. And don't do it by hand, for god's sake.

I would suggest having someone else do it, but also get some tips and maybe watch them do a bit if they'd let you, just so you could do similar stuff in the future confidently.
