I usually wouldn't recommend raising the action. Unless you have a tun-o-matic or floyd rose bridge. You will end up with a screwed intonation. At least try to raise it as little as possible.

For recording I use the Line 6 Guitarport Rifftracker. It's excellent for that, and it has the entire POD XT set of amps built in. So you don't have to run it through your amp.

Tube amps are perfect for EMG's. Personally I love the ENGL screamer stack with a good "EMG charged" guitar. That will give you a very nice distortion sound. The ENGL fireball is also a good choice...
