Follow-up: Spent a few hours with the Faderport and aside from some annoying firmware issues (mostly locating the latest firmware, which is NOT on their page, Sweetwater had a link to it luckily)...

No problem, glad that helped! The HS5s are a good choice. Definitely get the mo-pads, they make a WORLD of difference.

I say take your mic in the center of the room and record and see how it sounds....

Maybe your mic was pointed at the fretboard and it got a little too much squeak? Try pointing it towards the joint where the neck meets the body, that's where the fullest tone is projected from.
