I saw a valveking demo and it sounded great (didn't want to buy it at the time); bought it myself sometime later and it was muddy as all hell.

If it's just a slight tweaking it might work. Think of the way a tube screamer affects the tone of in front of a dirty amp; it'll probably be like that. Not as pronounced as an fx loop but noticeable...

yeah, muskets used to be around 175-185, went up in price recently to 195. Used you can find them occasionally on Craigslist (saw one in my area at $120) and reverb.com (130-150, shipping varying).

I love my green rhino. Basically separate bass and treble controls, and the ability to dial the mid hump in or out. I'd also look at the new Duncan 805 OD.

If a new amp isn't an option, I suggest buying a hardwire TL-2 metal pedal (used at $30-$50). Sounded much better than any distortion on my peavey vypr 15.

Do you have the micro amp on with the rest of these pedals? Because that's literally what it's supposed to do.
If not: Does your amp have send/return level control for the fx loops? Try lowering them...

Of these 3, I'd do a Marshall DSL40C. Better than a 6505 for what you want to do. Can't speak for the carvin, although I don't know if you want a head+cab or a combo more.

Yeah, the gain was closer to 4 come to think of it.

Depending on how you use the octave down settings, it can sound just like a dive bomb with a whammy bar. The "Dive Bomb" feature is 3 octaves (I think). So it's just a more extreme lowering of the...
