I have to say in that price range you are going...

I have to say in that price range you are going to get the best value with an Acoustic or an Ashdown. Go for as much wattage as you can afford in your budget btw--getting a loud guitarist or drummer...

I'm off bass for 4 weeks. Managed to slice piece of the tip of an index finger (fretting hand) with a very sharp Chinese cleaver. :sad: At least the damage is not permanent.

I've replaced a brass nut on a bass, its as easy as the plastic ones. Bone, which are more expensive I'd say, yes maybe hand off to a pro since if you mess it up, its costly.

A workhorse is a bass that you can grab in 99% of your situations and use. Unless you think you are always going to play experimental / psych music, a bass like the Hofner may not be a good choice...
