are those bearings on the fret bender? If so, nice. I went cheap and just cut some round wood knobs with my circle cutter and then put it in the drill press to cut a groove with a chisel.

I would try to get a orbital sander or palm sander instead of a belt sander. A belt sander is very aggressive and you may end up with a lot of low spots and otherwise messing up you contours.
