I don't agree with this. Power tube distortion is needed if you have a Marshall Plexi (for example) or some other old school amp that needs to be cranked to get distorted sounds.

Do you have any photos? Maybe changing the height of the pickup will be neccessary, if it's too high you will probably get better tone by lowering it too.

Why would he try to stay away from RGR? It's the same thing as a normal RG, the only difference is reversed headstock (the second R stands for reversed).

I like Ibanez, I have MTM2, it has Wizard II...
