there are a lot of altered and extended chords i.e. C6/9, F7#9, Gm11, Am7b5 (half-dim) as well as suspended and add chords, which are usually dependent on a vocal melody or other voice leading....

jazz is all about knowing the rules and then breaking them - theory is especially important, and i would suggest beefing up on that if you don't think you have at least a decent understanding of it.
