One of my two pedals is a Danelectro Cool Cat Distortion. It's not bad, since I only paid fifteen bucks, but it could certainly be better. It gives me like 30 seconds of sustain though.

Right. Maybe the old one was just.. old? And it was slow, so the new fast one just blew because it couldn't handle it?

The circuit board looks fine. Nothing charred, no smell or anything.

You'd have to disassemble the neck (Possibly remove the frets?), sand the whole thing, find the lacquer you wanted, apply it, hang it to dry and hope...
