I don't want to derail, but how exactly is it that running an attenuator ruins your power tubes? How is it any worse than just plugging into a speaker cab?

You could get an attenuator like the Jettenuator...

You could get an attenuator like the Jettenuator and just have the line out plugged into the interface without unplugging the cab.
