Yeah it sounds like you've got a bit of a case of tunnel vision - rather than getting bogged down on one thing you'd be far better off focussing on improving your alternate picking across the board....

I'm 40 and my vocal range is better than its ever been. A lot of it boils down to how much singing you do...it's like anything else, do it often enough and do it well and you'll get better at it.

All a capo does is change the pitch of open notes, it doesn't affect fretted notes - so as power chords generally don't contain open notes the capo has no effect.
