I know my local guitar shop will take a guitar in, change the strings and set it all up/make it look nice for around $20, and that includes a pack of strings so it's usually not that expensive.

I honestly have never thought about how I do it. I don't tap very often so I find I'll start out with just moving my finger, then if I'm doing it for long periods of time like in some Van Halen stuff...
