The only thing I can think of is he means not going back to the 12th fret? e.g. 12h15p12. If this is the case then it means you are missing out one note in the scale when descending.

As advised above I wouldn't go for the amp but I will answer the pedal question. I've got the MXR EVH Phaser and it is awesome, wah - 535Q, Overdrive - GT-OD, Carbon Copy, Whammy DT etc.

I think a lot of it comes from self motivation, when I got pissed off with it I would be pissed off at myself because I couldn't play it. This would make me keep on practising it over and over again...

Yeah, I agree with TheGroundZero's comment, I leave my valve amp for around a minute just to be on the safe side but if your hybrid only has preamp valves you can just turn it on and play.
