You want the bridge pickup closer to the strings...

You want the bridge pickup closer to the strings than the neck pickup.
Lowering the strings would affect your action, so if you don't want to do that just adjust the pickups.

HP doesn't make the best laptops but I would take that one with the i7 and 6 gigs of ram before I would take that used macbook with the i5 and 4 gb.

I would leave the bridge pickup as long as it's not causing any problems by touching the strings, then...

Here's a tip for tuning electric guitar: turn your tone knob all the way down. Cuts the overtones and lets the tuner hear the fundamental much better.

I have one, I love it. Solid guitar, satin neck and I appreciate the slightly shorter scale.
Be sure to check the pickup heights, you might have to lower the humbucker to get them to sound even.
