you don't need FW. USB can be engineered to run just as well - my Apogee Duet 2 is USB 2.0 and runs better than most FW devices developed before it. Don't let that psyche you out.

Won't damage the machine, but it could have an effect on your tape. Not sure if it will be noticeable or not, but you only have to worry about warping your $2 cassette and not your buddy's console....

It was, and he ran it through distortion. Harmonica mics aren't going to overload, your voice isn't more powerful than a harmonica. You will still need distortion after whatever mic you choose....

You have two options, TRS to XLR or TRS to TRS. Just buy some livewire stuff, you shouldn't need more than 5 feet - 3 will probably do it for you. They'll be like $7 each.
