how do you cover songs without a vocalist when jamming with drummers?

let's say you want to jam with a drummer and want to cover some well known songs. Let's say you know a song very well but drummer only knows it moderately.

How would the drummer know when to switch...

are there certain techniques using fingers that aren't possible using a pick?

new to bass guitar, would rather just play with a pick if there isn't a clear advantage using fingers as playing with a pick feels very natural as a guitar player.
