Ya generally they are crap with the exception of a few models that use legit pickups. My rule of thumb when buying epi's is to do a pickup swap and get it setup professionally asap.

Hm I wouldn't say the cleans on the hot rod series are "great". If you want serious great cleans that have that fender sound I would go with a Twin or Super Reverb. Not sure what your budget is...

Get a loud amp regardless of what anyone says. Every now and then you'll run into problems that can be solved by having a nice amp. I've had mic's fail on my amp, had the soundguy turn me down too...
