You need a footswitch with 3 buttons, 1 switches...

Just to emphasize what Offworld92 said, you should not overlook what your drummer is playing. Drums can make a night and day difference between oldschool and modern metal sound.

I had it for a few years and it is not good for bedroom levels, sounds pretty bad. I used boss ns-2 to play at "TV" levels.

I tried switching the tubes and nothing changed, i'm pretty much sure that it is the noise gate. I tried the noise gate on a different amp and there was no difference with it turned on or off.

In a band i play we have both 6505+ and ironheart. It is not bad with a tube screamer, but doesn't come close to a 6505 and without a tube screamer its not that great.
But for that price range it is...
