Sorry, I mistyped. I meant to say I used them for C# standard and drop c. I'm using in drop c or b most of the time though. If I remember right they seemed to be about right for C# standard.

I like jacksons myself. Although the necks are thin, the string spacing seems to be wider than most. I don't know the specs but after getting used to my Jacksons, other guitars seem a bit cramped.

What I do is use a multieffects unit for cleans and my amp for distortion. That way you can kinda do what you described, just without actually changing your amps channel.

I use DR DDT 12-60's for drop A on a 25.5 in scale guitar and they're a bit loose, but should be just about right for drop A#. Those or ernie ball "not even slinky" would be my recommendation.
