Go for the 85X. The 81 is an interesting choice for a basswood baritone as I imagine it would be quite bright.

I don't like the way Blackouts sound - I find them quite muddy and harsh.

Realistically, don't get EITHER of them. Agile is better but still pretty bad.

Yes, it's quite easy. Take a wiring guide for a 2 vol/2 tone/3 way setup and just disregard the tone controls. Simple as that.

I played one the other day.

Not a bad guitar, but I'm not a huge fan of the FR Special. Replace the saddles (which are zinc, and are too soft) with OFR saddles and you're good to go.

So as an update: I've decided to give magnet swaps a shot - changing the JB's Alnico 5 to an Alnico 8, and the 59 either to an Alnico 4 or an Alnico 8.

It's in an EMG soapbar housing, so black plastic. It's kinda like a BKP War Pig but a little bit brighter.

It certainly looks better than passives in soapbar routs! :haha:

EVH's guitar was all Charvel parts. They were really well made parts made of good...
