As for using paint and thinning it yourself, I've seen people use everything from water to Future floor polish.

That's not a pure raw DI sound. There's definitely some analog saturation on it, most likely on a preamp. As well, the VSTi itselft has a 'Distressor' in it, which really accentuates that growling...

I'd take a gander at the A&H iLive series. While they may not have the native MADI support you want, you can buy expansion cards that allow you to interface with most of the major digital recording...

The bass guitar needs something. I'd recommend duplicating the track and distorting it, as it doesn't sit well. Blend it into the raw bass track you have. Scoop the mids of it...

And if the 'nuances' of the SD tracks are being covered up by the guitars/bass/vocals/whatever, you obviously don't know how to properly...
