I used to keep my nails quite long but they've gradually gotten shorter and shorter, I only play steel string acoustics and couldn't play too fast or too hard without worrying about breaking a nail....

I know some folk tune 12 strings down a semitone or tone to deal with the extra tension - John Denver springs to mind. I suppose that is a practical use, most folk who do it with 6 string guitars...

Sounds like maybe the slots in the nut or saddle could be a bit too wide. Loose parts might also be to blame - loose tuning pegs, loose nut, etc.

And Landslide by Fleetwood Mac isn't massively well known but it's one of their best, and my very favourite song. (especially the live version :))
